HUGE - Hydrogen Oriented Underground Coal Gasification for Europe

Project Hydrogen Oriented Underground Coal Gasification for Europe – HUGE jwas a 36 month long R&D project funded by the EC within the Research Fund of Coal and Steel.

The objective of the Project was researching the hydrogen production technology in Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in a geo-reactor. The process was controlled by dynamic changes in temperature and pressure of the reagents and products. Within the project also the impact of the technology on the air, water and stability of the geological seams was analysed. The demo installation was built on the Premises of CCTW Mikołów in the Underground Testing Range.

Besides Główny Instytut Górnictwa, who was the coordinator of teh project, the consortium comprised of pratners from the Netherlands, Great Britain, Germeny, Czech Republic, Belgium and Ukraine represented by the following institutions:Delft University of Technology, UCG Partnership Ltd,  Universität Stuttgart, Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals, Institut Scientifique de Service Public, National Mining University, as well as two Polish research institutes: Instytut Górnictwa Odkrywkowego „Poltegor” i Politechnika Śląska and fuel-energy industry: Kompania Węglowa S.A. and BOT Górnictwo i Energetyka S.A.
